Your Journey to the Perfect Fit: What to Expect During Your William Wilson Consultation

Most people have never experienced a true custom clothing consultation. They've been to department stores. They've had a tailor shorten a hem. Some have even done made-to-measure. But a consultation built around who you are, how you live, and what you're trying to communicate to the world — that's a different experience entirely.
Every great outcome starts with the right process. This speaks for my home base of Charlotte, NC.
I know something about preparation. As a Navy veteran, I learned that the quality of your outcome is directly tied to the quality of your preparation. As a NASCAR champion, I understood that what happens before the race — the setup, the strategy, the details — determines what's possible once you're on the track. That same philosophy drives every consultation I conduct at William Wilson Clothing.
Here's exactly what to expect.
Before We Begin: Consultation Fees
A William Wilson Clothing consultation is a professional service and an investment in what comes next. Here's how it works:
Charlotte Consultations — $200 We meet in Charlotte for a full style assessment, fabric selection, and comprehensive measurements. The consultation fee is applied directly toward the cost of your order.
Travel Consultations — $500 plus travel expenses I come to you — anywhere in the country, or anywhere in the world. The consultation fee is applied toward your order. Travel expenses are separate and not included in the deduction.
This isn't a sales call. It's the beginning of a process designed to produce something exceptional. The consultation fee reflects that.
Step 1: The Personal Style Assessment
This is where we start — and it's the most important step of the entire process.
Before I take a single measurement, I need to understand you. We'll talk about your lifestyle, your profession, the rooms you walk into and the impression you need to make when you get there. We'll discuss how you spend your time — whether you're in boardrooms, on stages, at client dinners, or all of the above. We'll talk about the occasions you dress for most, the occasions you wish you dressed better for, and the gap between where your wardrobe is today and where it needs to be.
We'll also talk about your personal style instincts — whether you gravitate toward classic or contemporary, bold or refined, understated power or visible authority. Most people haven't fully articulated these preferences before. Part of my job is helping you get clear on them.
This conversation shapes everything that follows. A garment built without this foundation is just a well-fitted piece of fabric. A garment built with it is a strategic asset.
Step 2: Fabric Selection and Design Details
With your style profile established, we move into selection — and this is where the experience becomes genuinely enjoyable.
I'll guide you through my collection of premium fabrics sourced from the world's finest mills. We'll discuss the properties of different materials — the structure of a fine wool, the breathability of linen, the drape of cashmere — and how each one serves your lifestyle and climate. The right fabric for a Charlotte summer is a different conversation than the right fabric for a winter event in New York or Chicago.
Then we get into design. Every detail of your garment is yours to define: lapel style, button choice, pocket configuration, vents, lining pattern, monogram placement, contrast stitching. These aren't trivial decisions — they are the vocabulary of your personal style, and when they're chosen intentionally, the finished garment communicates exactly what you want it to communicate.
Step 3: Precise Measurements
This is where my expertise becomes visible in ways most clients don't expect.
I take a comprehensive set of measurements — not the eight or ten standard points you'd find in a department store, but a full picture of how your body is built and how it moves. I observe your posture, your shoulder slope, the way your weight is distributed, and any asymmetries that a standard pattern would ignore. Most bodies have them. Most garments pretend they don't exist.
This meticulous attention is what separates custom clothing from everything else. The result is a pattern built specifically for your body — one that accounts for every variable so the finished garment drapes correctly, moves with you instead of against you, and fits the way clothes are supposed to fit.
Step 4: Crafting Your Garment
Once your selections and measurements are finalized, construction begins.
Whether you've chosen hybrid bespoke or true bespoke, your individual pattern is created from scratch. Skilled artisans construct your garment with precision and care at every stage — from the canvas and interlining to the finishing details that define the final product. This is not a process that can be rushed, and we don't rush it.
Most hybrid bespoke garments are completed within four to six weeks. True bespoke, with its additional fitting stages and higher level of hand-finishing, takes longer. We'll give you a clear timeline at the outset so you can plan accordingly.
Step 5: The Fitting and Final Adjustments
For hybrid bespoke clients, we schedule a final fitting before delivery to ensure everything is exactly right. For true bespoke clients, we conduct two to three additional fittings throughout the construction process — each one an opportunity to refine, adjust, and perfect.
This stage is where the garment stops being a work in progress and becomes the finished expression of everything we discussed in your consultation. Any adjustments — however minor — are noted and executed with the same care as every other step in the process.
Step 6: Delivery and Unveiling
The moment you've been building toward.
Your completed garment is ready, and the experience of putting it on for the first time is unlike anything in the world of off-the-rack or made-to-measure. It moves with you. It sits correctly. It does exactly what it was designed to do. You don't have to think about it — and that's precisely the point.
From here, the goal is to build on it. Most clients who go through this process once begin thinking about the next piece almost immediately. That's not an accident. It's what happens when you experience clothing that works for you instead of against you.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Consultation Process
Is the consultation fee refundable? The consultation fee is not refundable, but it is applied in full toward the cost of your order. It covers the time, expertise, and preparation that go into making your consultation productive from the first minute.
What should I wear to my consultation? Wear something representative of how you typically dress — the goal is to understand your current style and build from it. If you have a specific occasion in mind for your garment, feel free to mention it so we can factor that into the conversation.
Can I bring someone with me? Absolutely. Many clients bring a spouse, partner, or trusted advisor. A second perspective can be valuable, especially when making design decisions.
How far in advance should I book? As far in advance as possible, especially if you have a specific event or deadline. For a garment needed within six weeks, reach out immediately so we can assess feasibility.
Do you travel internationally for consultations? Yes. Travel consultations are available anywhere in the world at $500 plus travel expenses. The consultation fee is applied toward your order; travel expenses are not included in that deduction.
What if I'm not sure what I want? That's exactly what the consultation is for. You don't need to arrive with a vision — you just need to arrive. My job is to help you get clear on what serves you best and guide you from there.
The Process Is the Product
I received the President's Lifetime Achievement Award by understanding something that most people overlook: the process is never separate from the outcome. How you prepare determines what you produce. How you approach the details determines whether the result is good or exceptional.
That's the philosophy behind every consultation I conduct. This isn't a transaction. It's the beginning of a relationship built around helping you show up at your best — in every room, for every opportunity, for as long as we work together.
If you're ready to start, I'd like to hear from you.
